Spirit of Freedom

Hidden in the busy streets of Tikatuli, Dhaka, stands the Rose Garden Palace—a place once alive with grandeur, now quietly fading into the city’s chaos. Built by zamindar Hrishikesh Das as a symbol of pride and culture, the palace has lost much of its shine over the years. Recognizing its fading legacy, Adnin Tazry, a student of North South University, developed the vision through Studio X, guided by Ar. Mujtaba Ahsan and Ar. AKM Saleh Ahmed Anik, to bring it back to life. Her project, “Spirit of Freedom: Reviving the Historical Rose Garden Palace,” proposes to transform the site into a museum and cultural center that celebrates heritage while engaging the community.

Her vision is simple yet powerful: to transform the 4.4-acre site into a vibrant museum and cultural center that not only restores the palace but also reawakens its forgotten spirit.

At the heart of the design lies the idea of experience. Visitors won’t just walk past static displays; instead, they will be drawn into interactive exhibits, immersive workshops, and curated stories that bring Dhaka’s history to life. From traditional Bengali restaurants serving authentic flavors to gift shops carrying local crafts, every corner will be filled with culture, memory, and engagement.

Architecturally, the project blends colonial and traditional Bengali styles, reflecting the layered history of the palace. The gardens will be reborn with the charm of British Raj-era layouts while embracing local design sensibilities. Courtyards will allow natural air to flow, glass blocks will light up underground spaces, and recycled water will nourish the restored gardens—ensuring sustainability is as important as beauty.

Most importantly, inclusivity stands at the core of Adnin’s design. The museum will welcome people of all ages and abilities, making sure no one feels left out. With ramps, accessible exhibits, and community-driven activities, the Rose Garden Museum is planned as a true cultural hub for everyone.

Through collaborations with schools and educational institutions, the museum will also serve as a learning center, helping students connect with heritage in a way that is both inspiring and engaging.

In essence, “Spirit of Freedom” is not only about reviving a building—it’s about reviving identity. By weaving history with modern solutions, Adnin Tazry’s project ensures that the Rose Garden Palace will once again stand as a proud symbol of Dhaka’s cultural heartbeat.
